Muskallonge Lake State Park to Host

“Rock On With Lake Superior Agates”

Muskallonge Lake State Park will host the second annual “Rock On with Lake Superior Agates.”  This free show will take place at the state park in Deer Park, MI on Saturday, September 19, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  The event is being sponsored by the Gitche Gumee Agate and History Museum, located 20 miles west in Grand Marais.

This is a rock show dedicated to Lake Superior Agate collectors and enthusiasts.  Come out and view collections, show off your own collection, and learn about the 1.2 billion year old Lake Superior agate.  There will be lapidaries on site, who will cut and polish your mineral treasurers; vendors selling agates, jewelry, books, mineral art, and other specialty items; kids games; silent auctions; and more.  Experts will also be available to help identify your rocks and determine whether they are agates.  At designated times throughout the day, guest speakers will give free presentations on Lake Superior geology, understanding and finding agates, lapidary methods, and microscopic crystal mounting techniques.

For decades, people have stayed at Muskallonge Lake State Park, because of its close proximity to the Lake Superior shoreline.  Many of the park’s guests have a special interest in rocks and venture across the street to the beach in search of the elusive Lake Superior agate.  This rock show provides a great educational opportunity for people to not only learn about agates, but to also become more familiar with other fascinating rocks and minerals.  “Last year’s show was a great success and this year’s event looks to be bigger and better,” stated Jim Dzelak, park supervisor.

Muskallonge Lake Sate Park is located approximately 28 miles northwest of Newberry, MI on Luce County Road 407.  You can also reach the park by travelling east from Grand Marais on Alger County Road H58 E, and then turning left onto CR 407.  Either before or after the show, stop by or visit the Gitche Gumee Agate and History Museum, located on Brazel Street in Grand Marais.  In September, the shop is open Sunday through Friday from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., and from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday.  More information about the museum is located on its web page at www.agatelady.com.
