What a sport we have!  We've come a long way baby.  Years gone by, a snowmobile was primarily used as an essential mode of transportation by snow-bound communities. 

Today, snowmobiling is a very popular recreational pastime and an essential revenue generating sport for winter snow-filled areas throughout the U.S.

Michigan Snowmobile Facts

-There are more than 390,000 snowmobiles registered in Michigan and contribute more than $1 billion to the state's economy every year.

-Regarded as one of the nation's top snowmobiling states, Michigan has about 6,200 miles of designated, groomed snowmobile trails, offering terrain of forest and field to both residents and visitors.

-Nineteen of the 26 deaths last season occurred in the evening hours, typically after dark.

-There are four major manufactures that build snowmobiles.  They are Arctic Cat- headquartered in Thief River Falls, MN; Bombardier Inc.- headquartered in Valcourt, Quebec; Polaris Industries- headquartered in Medina, MN; and Yamaha Motor Corporation- headquartered in Cypress, CA.

-In 2002 there were 203,153 snowmobiles sold world wide; 134,082 were sold in the U.S. and 50,719 were sold in Canada.

-The average suggested retail price of a new snowmobile sold in 2002 was $5,800.

-There are approximately 1.64 million registered snowmobiles in the US and 760,000 registered snowmobilers in Canada.
